This gig was conceived to commemorate a memorable 50th anniversary – luckily this was not in recognition of England winning the 1966 World Cup but rather a celebration of Jazz North East’s 50th birthday where they had the honour of hosting the great Ornette Coleman trio. True to form our 50 years of football hurt continues. England’s defeat against Iceland meant that rather than being obliged to stay at home and suffer their inevitable Euro quarter-final penalty shootout defeat against France the assembled audience were able to enjoy a spellbinding performance from this absolutely fabulous quintet.
Unusually, it seemed to take the audience a while to get going as the band really hit the ground running right from the kickoff. But once the crowd picked up the groove there was no turning back. Playing numbers from all periods of Coleman’s canon the quintet really did manage to evoke the spirit of the great man who sadly departed last year. It would be unfair to single out any member of the band because they were all equally superb conjuring up enthralling solos in conjunction with great ensemble playing. The band seemed to be visibly enjoying themselves and their enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment transferred itself to the highly attentive audience. Hopefully, this gig won’t just be a one off and this project will continue to develop enabling many more music fans to enjoy the experience of The Ornate Coalmen.
