Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Casey Golden Trio - Miniature

Casey Golden (pno); Bill Williams (bs); Ed Rodriguez (dms/perc)
(Review by Lance).
I enthused over the trio's last recording - Outliers - and I anticipated doing the same here. Well I do but, it doesn't quite grab me the way Outliers did. Don't get me wrong, consisting entirely of a single piece in 4 parts, Miniatures, an EP, is better than most contemporary piano albums I've listened to this year and, probably, if I'd heard this album first, I might be saying the same about Outliers!
Like so many of today's bands, you love them when you hear them live. However, that magic so often vanishes the following day when you play the disc, that you bought with such eagerness at the gig,  on the car stereo. Not having been in Sydney recently (or ever), I haven't actually heard the trio live but I guess you know what I mean
Of course, this isn't car stereo material - not if you want to hang on to your licence! It's contemporary chamber jazz. Music to listen to without the distraction of traffic, nagging wives or screaming kids. It's music to listen to, to enjoy and analyse if you have that advanced musical brain. EST springs to mind - I think it did after I heard their previous release.
Golden may be the best thing to come out of Australia since, er, since, er, since Bradman's 1948 test team!
Miniature is released on July 15 - check it out here.
Lance.
