Bebop Spoken There

Stan Woodward: ''We're part of the British jazz scene, but we don't play London jazz. We play Newcastle jazz. The Knats album represents many things, but most importantly that Newcastle isn't overlooked". (DownBeat, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Exhilarating contemporary jazz coming up at The Globe on Friday July 15

Zhenya Strigalev (alto saxophone), Michael Janisch (electric bass) & Marc Ayza (drums)
Alto saxophonist and composer Zhenya Strigalev is one of the rising stars of the European jazz scene and he is fast building a reputation on both sides of the Atlantic for his exhilarating take on contemporary jazz. His live shows are as exciting as they are uniquely eccentric, and after headlining around Europe with sold out shows at Porgy & Bess in Vienna and Ronnie Scotts in London he brings his powerhouse trio featuring the extraordinary US bassist Michael Janisch (Joe Lovano, Miguel Zenon, Gary Husband) and first-call Spanish drummer Marc Ayza (Jason Linder, Greg Osby) to blend the lines between jazz, funk, rock, electronica and improv in a genre mish-mash of high calibre interplay and raw emotion.
Tickets £15 on the door or in advance online
Highlight quotes:
“A typical Strigalev collision of hip jazz virtuosity and surrealism… Strigalev’s alto displays bebop agility, shivery lyricism, or sometimes a bluesy Ornetteish swerve.”
★★★★ The Guardian
“An addictive mix of colourful vignettes… Strigalev’s group could well be the next big thing in jazz.”
★★★★ All About Jazz
“Compelling in its inventive energy… [Strigalev] is an artist who knows jazz’s lineage but is unafraid to create his own path.”
★★★★ All About Jazz
“Russian-born saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev (long domiciled in the UK) is one of jazz’s mavericks. His playing has a mastery which puts him right at jazz’s heart.”
★★★★ The Telegraph (Ronnie Scotts’ live review).
★★★★ Read BSH CD review.

No need to even check the diary, the only thing that would keep me away from the Globe next Friday would be if the Early Birds were supporting the Gala Big Band somewhere I could have a drink or three.
Don't know the sax player, but bassman Michael Janisch is one of the most important Jazz musicians anywhere at the moment.
I had his last album which I think I gave away - no reflection on the quality, that's what I do - so I've 've ordered a couple of his previous, one of which turned up today and I'm really exited.
What, the Early Birds are supporting the Gala Big Band walking distance from home?
I can't catch a break!
