Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

RIP George Richardson

Just read on facebook that it was pianist George Richardson's funeral yesterday.
A fine pianist remembered for his band the George Ricco Quartet at various local nightspots including, I think, the Cavendish Club and also at the Gosforth Park Hotel.
I knew him via the Newcastle music shop where I worked - George taught at local schools - and we renewed acquaintance when he played with the Maine St. Jazzmen at a pub in South Shields.
A fine pianist and a true gentle-man.
I hope some readers will add their own memories of someone who will be sadly missed.
George was 83.
Lance.

Sorry to learn of the passing of George Richardson
Very nice person and a very easy musician to work with. Often pop into the Ramside Hall and had lunch with his wife on a Sunday afternoon.
Will be truly missed. R.I.P

George had a history of health issues since having a heart valve operation about 25 years ago, but managed to get back playing again with MSJ with whom he was playing until a few years ago. However he had a fall a few weeks ago and broke his hip, he was admitted to hospital, but his condition deteriorated over a three week period and he died about a week ago in hospital.
