Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

New Century Ragtime Orchestra News

The New Century Ragtime Orchestra is delighted to announce a return visit by two international stars of jazz piano – Stephanie Trick (USA) and Paulo Alderighi (Italy), who will be performing with the NCRO at Gateshead's Caedmon Hall on Sunday evening, 26 July (concert starts at 7.30 pm).  The Caedmon Hall is part of the Central Library, Prince Consort Road, Gateshead NE8 4LN, and there will be a licensed bar and ample free car parking.
Stephanie and Paulo have been performing together since 2010 across the USA, Europe and Japan, and this is one of their rare UK appearances.  Stephanie performs in the ragtime, stride and boogie woogie styles of Fats Waller and James P Johnson whereas Paulo focuses on the music of Erroll Garner, Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson.  Stephanie and Paulo will be performing solo, duo, and with the band, and last year's concert was a highly memorable evening's entertainment featuring two world-class jazz musicians.   Try looking them up on YouTube for a sneak preview!
Last year was a sell-out, and tickets (£15) are already going fast, so to secure your seat please reserve your ticket by calling Dave Kerr on 0191 281 4011, or by emailing him

Phil Rutherford
The New Century Ragtime Orchestra
This twelve-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of Ragtime in the 1890’s through to the early Swing Era of the 1930’s.
Lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for full ensemble, we perform not only ragtime composers such as Scott Joplin but also the classic jazz and hot dance music of the 1920’s, and the early swing of Duke Ellington.
