Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Getting Monk is a Habit

(Preview by Russell).
Tonight (Saturday 11, midnight) Geoffrey Smith’s Jazz (Radio 3) listens to the music of Thelonious Monk. One week later Graeme Wilson (saxophones) and Paul Edis (piano) play the music of Thelonious Monk at the Jazz Café, that’s Saturday 18, 9:00pm.
Mark Armstrong, artistic and music director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, drops by the studio to talk to Clare Teal (Radio 2, Sunday, 9:00pm) about the orchestra’s 50th anniversary year.
Tuesday, Radio 4 looks at The Hang Drum Phenomenon (11:30am).
Tuesday night at half past ten on the BBC World Service The Documentary: a Portrait of Horace Parlan hears from the great bop-era pianist. Resident in Denmark since 1973, 84 years old Parlan is now in a care home. Essential listening.
If you’re in need of a laugh then Stewart Lee’s your man. Friday morning (11:30am) Lee presents In the Moment on Radio 4 (FM only). The standup won Celebrity Mastermind. His specialist subject? Free improvisation! A life long fan of the form, Lee delves into the music. A friend of many of the practitioners – Sarah Gail Brand, Evan Parker and others – the man communicates his passion. Finally, Radio 3’s Friday edition of In Tune comes live from the Royal College of Music featuring the Winston Rollins Big Band. Tune in at 4:30pm.
