Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Strictly Smokin' Big Band @ The Millstone Feb.26.

(Review by Lance).
When you've heard a band so many times the problem you are presented with is what can you say that you haven't already said before?
The answer is found in the equation w + x + y = n².
w = enthusiasm, x = superb arrangements, y = brilliant soloists, n = Basie (and the rest) squared!
Not that this is a mathematically regimentated band - far from it! They're tight when it needs to be tight and loose when fluidity calls.
My colleague Russell thought the piece about somebody having his toenail removed was fantastic - Black Nail?
This was an occasion where Russell and I disagreed - personally I'd have preferred to have had my toenail removed.
Having said that, the dissonance did have a certain left of centre appeal - imagine Kenton's Neophonic Orchestra playing Peanut Vendor and all the musicians suffering from a peanut allergy.
Away from that moment the band dug deep and, despite the deps - or maybe because of them - it swung.
Vocals from Lindsay and James, solos from the big hitters plus contributions from Jamie and Dave (big hitters in their own right) made this the best, last Thursday in the month for free, gig in town!
