This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Ray Charles - King of Cool, The Genius of Ray Charles

What'd I Say? What could I say? 73 tracks spread over 3 CDs covering a period from 1952-1961. They dubbed him "The Genius" and when it came to blues and soul and rock and jazz it was a fair description! The voice was smooth enough to reach the outside world but raspy enough to satisfy the inner circle of the cognoscenti whilst Charles' piano playing was more than that of just another 12 bar bluesman. 
He could hold his own in the exalted company he sometimes moved in. On one track Milt Jackson's on guitar (!) along with Billy Mitchell on tenor, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Connie Kay on drums.
Needless to say his long-time tenor man David "Fathead" Newman frequently steps up and blows as does Sam The Man Taylor on the opener - The Mess Around.
A mix of hits such as Unchain My Heart, Hit the Road Jack and, of course, What'd I Say? mingle with some well known blues belters and a few standards thrown in for good measure such as the mega-hit version of Georgia on my Mind and Come Rain or Come Shine.
Originally released as Atlantic singles, EPs and LPs Warner Jazz have titled this compilation as King of Cool - The Genius of Ray Charles.
I reckon they got it right!
