Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Redemption Jazz Fill Empty Shop. December 4.

John Hall (saxes); Jim Hall (keys); Keith Tulip (bs); Martin Wake (dms).
(Report by Keith Tulip.)
Great gig last night at the Empty Shop in Durham which gave us another opportunity to perform our new tunes live to what turned out to be a very appreciative audience and a cracking new venue.
All the seats were taken right through the venue and Carlo kept all the doors open through to the Bar area so that everyone got the benefit of the performance wherever they preferred to sit even the "speakeasy door" to the venue from the street was open which brought in a few more punters!
New tunes are; Manifestation | Quando | FreeLance | Hood-Winked | If | Up Tight | There's a Question Mark | Estados de Animo | Inspector | Interlude | El Loco.
Six of these are already available to view on both the website and YouTube,
(please note these are all live, second-takes, no audio editing as we just wanted to capture the essence of the new tunes with a view to developing them live).
We ran out of time last night to perform two more new tunes, so these will most likely get an airing at the next gigs in the new year which are;
Sunday  19th January at The Black Bull Blaydon 8:30pm *all proceeds to go to Marie Curie*
Wednesday 29th January at The Queens Hall Café 8:00pm c/o Hexham Jazz Club
Friday   4th April  at No28 *TBC
Keith T.
