The Chase

No, not Wardell Gray and Dexter Gordon but a tv quiz program.
Question: What instrument did jazz musician Ronnie Scott play?
a Clarinet; b Saxophone; c: Piano.
The contestant, a musician herself, plumped for a - clarinet.
The answer was, of course, b - saxophone.
However, it is probable that Ronnie did play clarinet as most sax players of his generation did. So maybe they ought to have brought the third umpire in on this one.

When I was with the Ted Heath Orchestra around 1946-7, all saxophone players were expected to double on clarinet. The moment of truth arrived when we made the musical London Town, and all these superb players from the London symphony orchestra were augmented. The clarinet section comprised Reginald Kell, Jack Brymer, myself and Johnnie Grey. I would publicly like to thank Mr Kell and Mr Brymer for never laughing once.
