This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. January Jazz Jam @ Hoochie Coochie. January 31.

Peter Gilligan (pno); Mark Williams (gtr); Paul Grainger (bs); Jeff Armstrong (dms) plus guests..
A rousing first set that included Whisper Not, Joyspring and Blue Rondo a la Turk as well as pieces by Jim Hall, Bill Evans and Bob Mintzer. All four guys were firing on all cylinders with Pete outstanding on Joyspring. 
Interval time and the second set looked even more promising. Don Forbes, Paul Gowland were present with instrument cases, Eric Stutt had his sticks, Debra her vocal chords...
Trombonist Joe Fowler, an alto player, a drummer and a bass player whose names I didn't catch joined Pete and Mark. Unfortunately, after three numbers from Gabby (pictured in photo by Kaveh Emami) - Loverman, Lullaby of Birdland and 'Roind Midnight with solos all round - time began to run out. A blues mama sang Stormy Monday and Lindsay Hannon chipped in with I Thought About You and This Can't Be Love by which time the instrumentalists had left and what had the potential to be a great night was downgraded to just a very good night.
