This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Mac Gollehon - La Fama

Mac Gollehon (tpt) plus "Legends of the New York Latin Scene".
Recorded in the 1980's when Latin Jazz was making its emergence (or should that be re-emergence thinking back to Dizzy, Machito, Puente etc?) the "Legends" include Doc Cheatham, Eddie Montalvo, Hilton Ruiz, Potato Valdez, Lester Bowie and Charlie Palmieri. The arrangements are by Gollehon and are perfectly tailored to this outfit.

Gollehon is the most extensively featured - his solo flights being comparable with Miles (muted) and Arturo Sandoval (open). Listen to Voices - this cat is Maynard, El Gato, Dizzy and Sandoval rolled into one! You don't need a piccolo player when Mac is back in town.
Conjunto Moods has Gollehon trading solos with Doc Cheatham and Ray Maldonado on what was a memorable and exciting track.
One or more of the 'bones are at the races too - probably Rodriguez - great shouting trombone in the old tradition.
The final Night in Tunisia is a tribute to Dizzy - I think he would have liked it - I certainly did!
The percussionists keep the pot boiling - who says that Latin Jazz doesn't swing? this one swings its sombrero off!
