This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Bobby Wishart International Quintet @ The Jazz Bar Edinburgh March 15

It’s been a while since I visited this prestigious venue but was pleased to see that standards have not dropped. Still at least three sometimes four gigs a day. Lunchtime, early evening, 9 pm to midnight and midnight to 3 am sessions still in place
Arrived early for a good seat for the 9 pm to midnight set. Intrigued by the time and effort Bobby Wishart spent in setting up and helping all the band settle in. Two inch thick bound tombs of arrangements for each player, except (as usual) one for the drummer! No announcements or introductions – just unbelievable jazz care of Bobby, who doubled up on tenor and house Yamaha Grand piano. Bobby was often featured with keyboard man Geno Ciancio from Malta with his “orgel” patch. Not the first time I've heard the highly creative, in demand Glasgow trumpeter Robert Henderson. Fantastic fast and furious playing from the two Bobs! Hungarian Karoly Nagy from was on drums with bassist Ed Kelly from Ireland. Seriously swinging standards and very melodic sounds from this excellent band.  By the end of the last set the place was beginning to fill up and become noisy with late nighters getting ready for the 12 till 3 gig. We said our thanks to Jazz Bar manager (and drummer) Bill Kyle just in time to catch Masquerade and Shadow of your Smile to round off a perfect evening.
