Djangologie, one of Jazz North's 12 bands selected as Northern Line Ambassadors, gave Cherry Tree diners a taste of why they have been given this accolade with a varied program of Hot Club classics, newer numbers and some original compositions. Indeed some of the band's originals sounded more original than the original if you follow my drift. I didn't catch many of the announcements, partly because they came over slightly muffled and partly because I was too engrossed in my Game Ravioli, Fricassee of Cabbage and Peas, Truffle Consomme - a dish, like Djangologie, deserving of a Bistro in Montmartre.
I don't claim to have heard all the British Django bands - I sometimes think there are more in the UK than in France - but, of the ones I've heard this ensemble takes some beating.
James Birkett - super soloist - Giles Strong doing on one guitar what the Hot Club did with two (rhythm guitars) and Emma, surely her middle name is Stephanie! Mick Shoulder's bass provided the firm harmonic foundation and the overall effect is on a par with my Pan Fried Bistro Rump Steak, Frites, Garden Salad and Mustard. This was delicious and not a stirrup or a saddle in sight...
To finish, it was Lemon Tart, Fresh Rasberries, Raspberry Sorbet and The Sheik of Araby..

Although I had heard the various band members in different combinations before, this was the first time I had heard Djangologie, and they were great. As a long time Djangonista, I have always been a fan of Hot Club music and any chance to hear it is not to be missed. James Birkett played electrifying acoustic solos and both he and Giles Strong produced that Hot Club rhythmic drive which Emma Fisk soloed above very eloquently. Like Lance I had the game ravioli and steak aux frites as it seemed appropriate to the music but being a cheese eating jazz monkey, I had the cheese board (which was excellent). And just a word for the serving staff who do an excellent job without interfering in the enjoyment of the music. Tres bien and merci beaucoup.
