This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Hello Lance
I saw this documentary quite a few years back and really liked Joe's classic bebop piano playing and found his life story quite moving too. So I went out and bought a vinyl album of his trio/quartet. Some tracks featured a great jazz guitarist I'd not heard before - Al Gafa. Lovely playing from him too. It makes you wonder how many fantastic players were mostly under the radar from that era, who never got the wider recognition they deserved.
