This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz in Amsterdam Part 3 (of 3). November 25

Café Alto.
This is a very narrow and long bar with a tiny stage at one end,but is the perfect place that jazz lovers like to be. A typical jazz club setting but with free entry.
The night we were there an un-named quartet were on, hard hitting tenor sax. player, guitarist, electric bass,and drums,who all just managed to get onto the stage and played a lot of pleasurable mainstream jazz, mostly popular/standards pieces .
We left at 1am and I'm sure they had a few more sets to play that night.Again the band were good musicians and we were reluctant to leave it was so good, but we were going home the next day so could not stay till the end.Would go again without question if I could,especially to see Candy Duffler and her father who both play there on occasions I am told.
Conclusion: If you are in Amsterdam and interested in Jazz/World music it's a good place to be!!
