This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD review. Nick Pride and the Pimptones - Midnight Feast of Jazz

Special guests - Graham Hardy (tpt/flg); Paul Edis (pno); Paul Loraine/James Peacock (keys); Alex Leathard/Chris Hibbard (tmb); Tom Quilliam (bar); Zoe Gilby/Jess Roberts/Susan Hamilton (vcls).
Anyone who thinks the Pimptones aren't a jazz force to be reckoned with should listen to this CD. Sure they're funky, sure they've got soul,  sure they wear suits - they even wash. But, most importantly, the band - and their guests on the disc - have got jazz chops. Close your eyes and you could be listening to a Blue Note vinyl recorded sometime between 1955 and tomorrow - but mainly today.
It's precise, it swings, it rocks, it jumps and the soloists go for it and get it!
Picking out an individual would be pointless as each has contributed so much - the rhythm section drive it like they had 32 wheels and as many gears! Out front the horns preach the gospel aided and abetted on three tracks by, individually, Zoe, Jess and Susan. Zoe we all know cuts it but the other two are up there with her.

As a listener as much as a player in the NE it’s always good for me to hear who’s up to what and who’s playing where. And your little blogpost is where we all look. Keep up the good work marra!
