Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Michael Janisch's Paradigm Shift Concept this Friday at the Lit and Phil, Newcastle

As a taster for those who are as yet undecided about attending Jazz North East's concert at the Lit and Phil by Michael Janisch's Paradigm Concept they could do worse than read the band's trumpet player Jason Palmer's comments on the tour so far which culminates at the L and P on Friday. Jason's enthusiasm for the project is infectious and I have the feeling that Friday will be an end of term no holds barred gig!
Read about it on LondonJazz.
Complete line-up is; Jason Palmer (trumpet/flugel), Paul Booth (tenor), Esperanza Spalding's pianist Leo Genovese (piano, keys), and Colin Stranahan (drums).
Lance.
Michael Janisch's Paradigm Shift Concept Friday May 6, Lit and Phil Society, Neville St., Newcastle. 8:00pm £12/£10 (conc.) 0191 2320192.

I don't think describing Leo Genovese as someone's pianist really does him justice. (and it's Spalding not Salding)

I have corrected the spelling which I lifted directly from the original article by Jason Palmer on LondonJazz as I did with the description of Leo Genevese.
I don't think there is anything wrong in Jason passing a comment on Leo's involvment with the Spalding Band. It's just like referring to Johnny Hodges as a member of the Ellington Band.

They were very good when they played Glasgow last week (with David Lyttle on drums). In particular, Jason Palmer is an excellent trumpeter. Review here: http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts-ents/music-reviews/michael-janisch-s-paradigm-shift-the-griffin-glasgow-1.1098902
