The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Don Ferrara

Just a note to mention that trumpeter Don Ferrara died 18th. January aged 82. He’s been living near San Diego, California. He was a student of Lennie Tristano’s and was instrumental (sorry) in introducing Warne Marsh to Lennie when both Don and Warne were together in the US army in 1947. Jack Goodwin.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Don Ferrara. One of my favourite tracks was the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band's 1960 recording of Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'", which boasted a great trumpet solo by Don. Another underrated great. DAVE THE RAVE

Decades ago I had An EP recording of Lee Konitz and Don Ferrara called "Very Kool".
On this recording, this hard bop trumpeter blows some awesome explosive trumpet with some very high notes thrown in.
His solo work is well conveived and superbly executed.

I KNEW DON FERRERA MANY YEARS AGO...I STUDIED PIANO WITH LENNY TRISTANO AND OFTEN WENT TO HEAR HIM PLAY AT THE "HALF NOTE" IN NYC...ON MANY OCCASIONS DON FERRARA SAT IN AND HE WAS TRULY AMAZING! HE WILL BE MISSED...
