This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Billy Calboutin

I've just received this sad news - Billy Calboutin. (drums) passed away peacefully aged 73 years on the 22-08-2010. Requiem mass at St Bernadette`s on Tuesday 31-08-2010 at10.00am followed by cremation at Tynemouth crematorium.
I only played a couple of gigs with Billy but he was a good drummer. We talked on the way back about Boxing as much as about music! Billy, apparently, had 'done a bit', He had that stocky build often common to drummers and boxers.Heard him on Sunday evenings at the Corner House with the Panama Jazzmen - see photo.
Yet another drummer!
RIP.

Billy Calboutin was a nice man, a good drummer, and a terrible driver! He nearly did for us both one night on the A1 near Alnwick, leisurely driving his Polski-Fiat up the right hand side of the road, whilst under the impression that it was a dual carriageway bit! I think it was either my screams of terror or my disappearing under the dashboard that alerted him just in time to slot back in behind a lorry on the left!
The picture was taken at the Corner House in Heaton probably between 1977 and 1980. The band was Joe McMullon's, and would probably have been billed as either the Panama or The Maine Street Jazzmen. A youthful me on tenor, Joe on Trumpet/cornet, Ray Chester, trombone, Norman Rudd, piano Eric Gamblin, guitar, Ray Jobling, bass, and Billy at "la batterie". Good Luck, Bill.
