Art Blakey (to Terence Blanchard): ''You ain't Miles find your own shit to do!'' (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Friends Of Jazz. All Saints Church Hall Cleadon Aug 4th.

Mick Hill, trumpet, Andy Bennett, reeds, Don Fairley, trombone, Bill Britten, keyboard, Bill Colledge, bass, Laurie Brown drums and Mia Webb vocal.
After my session at the Porthole I was in need of consolation and inspiration, so with passport, visa and list of injections in hand I headed across the Tyne to Cleadon. I walked into the hall in time to hear Mia tell us the Joint Was Jumping and so it remained for the rest of the night. Mia sang A Train , Goody Goody, Hard Hearted Hannah, Frim Fram Sauce, S'Wonderful, Please Don't Talk About Me and a lovely ballad Where Do You Start. This was a new one on me and well worth the trip alone. As for the band , well what can you say, the mark of true craftsmen is the ability to make it all look and sound so easy and this is what they did.
With a band of this class you can't really single any body out but, considering he was suffering from mouth ulcers, Mick Hill “played a blinder”. The pad included :- Chasing The Blues Away, Things Ain't What They Used To Be, You Can Count on Me, Splanky, Jersey Bounce and 9.20 Special.
At £5 including supper an excellent evening and a word to the organizers, publicize it more next time. I am now fully inspired musically and over my fear of foreign parts.
Miles.

Maybe the organisers or the band members should contact Bebop Spoken Here before their next gig.
I hope you spread the word? If I'd known I'd have been there myself!

Hi lance. The band have played this venue for years and unfortunately the organisers don't know of your website (but I will sort that out). We normally have a full house but this time the members were few and far between and we cannot work out why. But nevertheless we (the band) enjoyed every minute, as we always do. The audience is very accommodating and the fact that we (the band)have a reserved table set out for us for our 'buffet' is worth turning up for. This gig is a gem and the organisers Clive and Lesley need a medal the size of a dustbin lid. My kindest regards Mia Webb
