This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. A Cool Yule and a Boppy New Year When it Comes

My attention has been directed to a card inside the new jazz uk. The subject is Nikki Iles' "Jazz on a Winter's Night" (Christmas carols and songs in "authentic jazz styles".)
This posed my correspondent with the question as to what Nikki (or the publishers) consider to be an "authentic jazzstyle"?
The book (11 Christmas classics for jazz piano) is also described as having "pieces with written-out improvisations, fully notated".
"Written out improvisations". What, he wonders, is jazz coming to?
Well, as one of Nikki Iles' fans, I'm sure the publishers are the perpetrators here. Perhaps "Written out variations" would be more appropriate?
Still, speaking as someone who dug MJQ's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, it would be nice to think that as we approach the "Season of Good Swill" we might hear some swingy sounds rather than the traditional dull and boring fare.
