This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Sunday night at the Globe: Five-Way Split @ The Globe, Newcastle - Mar. 29

Five-Way Split. It all sounds rather democratic, doesn't it? Quentin Collins, Vasilis Xenopoulos and Rob Barron are the composers, bassist Mátyás Hofecker and drummer Matt Home the dream team rhythm section. What isn't in question is the brilliance of all five musicians. Touring their new album, Modus Operandi, Five-Way Split made a late afternoon dash from a Wigan Jazz Club engagement to Newcastle's award-winning Globe music venue, arriving in time for an eight o'clock start.

Dr Stol (it's something to do with London's 606 Club*) opened proceedings and from the off this was one helluva gig. The new album's title track, Modus Operandi, is a neat handle. What they do (they being Five-Way Split) is pay homage to the bop era without compromising their own individual musical identities. Xenopoulos' Two Little Alphas, Rob Barron's arrangement of Henry Mancini's Dreamsville, whatever the material, a remarkable feature of this evening's concert was a lack of volume. Yes, the horns were on mics, nevertheless, the low decibel count made for a pleasant change.           

Hard bop/post-bop original compositions with a sprinkling of standards filtered through a twenty first century lens, if the Jazztet and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers are in your record collection, Five-Way Split is the band you've got to hear, live, in concert.
