This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gerry Richardson Quartet @ Yamaha Music School, Blyth - Mar. 30

Vying for renewable energy capital of the UK, the south east Northumberland port of Blyth is on the up. A harbour front hotel, a recently opened arts/cinema space and not one but two thriving music schools, if it's a Monday lunchtime, it's Yamaha Music School time.

This week, Hammond ace Gerry Richardson made a welcome return to Seaforth Street. Some ten days or so on from a sold out appearance at Newcastle's Lit & Phil, Richardson's quartet hit the ground running with Comin' Home Baby. No need for a bass player in this band, Richardson plays the pedals! 

Mose Allison's Everybody Cryin' Mercy (Garry Linsley's soulful alto), Jimmy Witherspoon's Money's Getting Cheaper, the set list familiar. Adopting the adage 'If it ain't broke', Richardson simply plays tunes he likes. And why not?! That said, there was a surprise inclusion. Anthony Adams' Old Timers, written by the composer for the Richardsons. Paul Smith's party piece African Sunset is a fixture (Smith working off guitarist Rod Sinclair's riff), as was the set-closer, Bobby Hebb's Sunny. Russell
