This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) SPARK: Jazz from the Netherlands shines a light on one of Europe’s most consistently influential jazz scenes. The Netherlands has long been recognised for producing musicians of exceptional creative independence and international reach. From established global figures to a new generation reshaping the language of improvised music, Dutch artists are known for a willingness to challenge the traditional.

This is a scene supported by strong conservatoires, forward-thinking venues and a culture that values the experimentation as much as the craft. SPARK brings that breadth to the festival stage: distinctive voices, cross-border collaborations and artists who contribute meaningfully to the wider European jazz conversation.

We invite you to open your ears and step into a programme, shaped in the Netherlands, where creativity and imagination go hand in hand. An international celebration of jazz as a living, evolving art form.
