This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review : Edward Simon Trio - Venezuela: Latin American Songbook Vol. 2 (ArtistShare)

Pianist Simon continues his exploration of the Latin American Songbook visiting the music of Venezuela for volume two. Actually recorded in California, Simon's arrangements and re-imagined interpretations of six folk melodies indigenous to the South American country paint a totally different picture to what is currently being portrayed in the media.

Simon's jazz infused improvisations bring universal appeal to the material without losing contact with his homeland's rich heritage in Punta Cardón and elsewhere.

His fellow Venezuelans Rogers and Cruz are with him all the way adding authenticity to the rhythm section with the exotic beat of the merengue and  the joropo. The latter rhythm is heard to great effect with the addition of Jackeline Rago on El Vuelo de la Mosca where her shaking maracas and strumming cuatro combine with bass and drums to give lift off to Simon's shimmering piano solo.
