Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Caper at the Coffee House by Warren Barker

Further to my post about the old TV show 77 Sunset Strip, Maurice Summerfield, who was also a fan, as well as being Barney Kessel's authorised biographer, made a few observations on  Kessel's role on that and other soundtracks...
Guitarist Barney Kessel played on the 77 Sunset Strip TV show's jazz-infused soundtrack, specifically contributing guitar to albums like the "Pop and TV Themes Go Jazz" compilation by Warren Barker and His Orchestra, alongside other top jazz players like Buddy ColletteShelly Manne, and Red Mitchell, bringing cool jazz vibes to the detective show's popular theme and related tracks.

Key Details:

The Show: 77 Sunset Strip was a popular 1950s/60s detective series known for its hip, jazzy atmosphere.

The Music: The soundtrack, featuring the famous theme, was recorded by Warren Barker's Orchestra, featuring a lineup of top West Coast jazz musicians.

Kessel’s Role: Kessel was the featured guitarist, lending his distinctive sound to tracks like the main theme and other instrumental pieces.

Album: You can find Kessel's work on compilations like Pop and TV Themes Go Jazz, where he's listed with other notable musicians.
