Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Cable Street Rag Band @ Jamboree, King's Cross - Dec. 4

Ewan Bleach (alto sax, tenor sax, clarinet, vocals); Joplin Parnell (piano); John Kelly (guitar); Harry Evans (double bass)

A stone's throw from King's Cross Railway Station, just off Gray's Inn Road, tucked away on St Chad's Place, stands Jamboree. On a Wednesday afternoon you can find TJ Johnson playing a few tunes, often with guests sitting in. All very casual, free admission too (be sure to tip TJ). This Thursday evening (admission in advance or on the door) Ewan Bleach was holding court, as he does every week.

The Cable Street Rag Band comprises a hardcore of musicians, plus whoever is available on the night. This evening, Bleach was able to call upon guitarist John Kelly, string bassist Harry Evans and the late-arriving Joplin Parnell (piano). All very casual (as with TJ Johnson), this is a dancer's gig. Bleach and his merry band played whatever they liked and the many dancing couples seemed to like it.

Two sets would be the norm, your correspondent didn't bargain on three sets plus a jam session! Too many tunes to mention, Bleach, switching instruments from one number to the next (often from one verse to the next), his band mates rock solid in support. The set list - if there was a set list! - included After You've Gone, a rollicking Maple Leaf RagMy Blue HeavenChasing Shadows (for P. Durham) and Way Down Yonder in New Orleans

Second set, pianist Joplin Parnell arrived hotfoot from a lucrative early evening function gig. In all probability, Ewan Bleach has one hundred plus tunes in his head/at his fingertips. Some of them would feature in the second and third sets. A rip-roaring San, a measured Someday Sweetheart, the Cable Street Rag Band entertained the many dancers and those there to simply listen to the music.

Joplin Parnell, looking every bit the juke joint piano player, played with a nonchalance befitting the occasion - a crowded dance floor, beer flowing, a truly social occasion. Messrs Kelly and Evans (the latter a big hit at this year's Classic Jazz Party) formed a tremendous rhythm section, turning their hand(s) to whatever Bleach threw at them. It was five minutes to midnight, a jam session was about to take us into the early hours...  Russell
