Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Woody Shaw - Love Dance (Time Traveler Recordings)

Woody Shaw (trumpet); Steve Turre (trombone); René McLean (alto sax), Billy Harper (tenor sax); Joe Bonner (piano); Cecil McBee (bass); Victor Lewis (drums); Guilherme Franco, Tony Walters (perc).

Five originals by Shaw originally released in 1976 on the now defunct Muse label and brought back into circulation by the intrepid Zev Feldman on his appropriately named Time Traveler Recordings label.

Post hard-bop over a pulsating Latin rhythm. Latin, but far removed from the suave bossas and cha chas of Brazil. More Cuban.

The horns are on fire, no holds barred. Both saxes pushing their instrument to the limit. Harper I remembered from hearing him live with the Cookers back in the day when Sage Gateshead, as was, hosted an annual international jazz festival. René McLean I knew only as being the son of a famous father - Jackie McLean. However, upon hearing him I can only say that dad would have been mighty proud of him.

Turre is the trombonist always on call. With a tone to die for he's as modern as tomorrow whilst still echoing the ghosts of the past. Woody Shaw has long been a favourite of mine ever since I heard him live, back in the '80s at the North Sea Jazz Festival. He's on fire on this album justifying his position in Gabriel's Big Band alongside Hubbard, Brownie and Morgan.

Bonner, who left us in 2014 at the relatively young age of 66, shows that he'd already developed the distinctive style that led to him becoming an in demand pianist both as leader and sideman. McBee may be 90 but he still figured in the 2025 Downbeat poll with more votes than he did in 1976! He's a tower of strength and a fine soloist. Lewis too has his shining moments which, combined with Franco and Walters' exotic drive, make for a rhythm section deserved of the best and the best got what they deserved! Lance
