This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Paul Skerritt Big Band @ Pilgrim - Sunday August 10.

This Sunday afternoon (August 10) at Pilgrim (formerly Hoochie Coochie) sees the debut of the Paul Skerritt Big Band at the iconic city centre venue.

The big band, comprising of the cream of north east musicians, will provide a swinging backing for one of the best crooners in the UK. 

Coming on the back of sell-out concerts at the Glasshouse in Gateshead and the Westovian in South Shields you can expect a programme of showstoppers ranging from way back to way way forward. And, if you feel like dancing, get up and shake it.

As I wrote in my review of the Paul Skerritt Big Band's gig at the Glasshouse: 

This wasn't Gateshead, it was Vegas in its heyday with the Rat Pack compressed into one personality backed by a swinging big band.
