A last gig of the year for Rendezvous Jazz. Christmas jumpers, hats, tinsel, the usual stuff and a raffle, the latter seeing your correspondent bagging a box of Quality Street. A pint of Landlord, a cheese, ham and pickle sandwich (with fries) and we were ready to sit back and listen to Maureen Hall's long established band.
Alexander's Ragtime Band got things underway with Gavin Lee, clarinet, leading the charge. Maureen sang 'S Wonderful, bassist Tom Derbyshire sang Just a Gigolo, pianist Brian Chester playing all the chords. Across the course of two sets, solos were shared around the band, trombonist Gordon Solomon as eloquent as always. Drummer Gordon Turnbull did the necessary, unobtrusive, allowing the frontline - Maureen, Gavin and Gordon S - to do its thing.
It had been an enjoyable afternoon. Maureen and the boys will be back at the Monkseaton Arms on the first Friday in January (Jan. 3) and the following night (Saturday 4) Rendezvous Jazz will be at the Red Lion in Earsdon with the band's rescheduled Christmas party which fell victim to the weather earlier this month.
