Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Cockerton Prize Silver Band @ Darlington Market - Dec. 7

En route to St Augustine's Parish Centre for the New Century Ragtime Orchestra's lunchtime concert, calling into Darlington Market (a large covered space housing myriad stalls, a micro pub/bar, pool table and more) proved to be fortuitous. Within seconds, the sound of a brass band playing Ding Dong Merrily on High rang out. Rounding the corner there they were - the Cockerton Prize Silver Band!

The band's performance was a fundraiser of sorts. This being the season not to be Scrooge-like, your correspondent took time to listen to a few tunes and cough up a few coppers. The Cockerton band, led by Ian Robinson (cornet), yes, the same Ian Robinson to be found in the trumpet section of the Durham Alumni Big Band, played for themselves and anyone happy to listen, of which there were a goodly few. We exited to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It'll soon be Christmas! Russell

Ah! I remember well those icy Xmas mornings playing carols with the Jarrow Jarvis Brass band. Blowing second cornet wearing gloves, scarves and a woolly hat. We weren't as tough as the Cockerton tuba player playing without a coat and in short sleeves!
