Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Historic album: Tony Fruscella & Brew Moore - Fru'n Brew (Spotlite)

Tony Fruscella (trumpet); Brew Moore (tenor sax); Bill Triglia (piano); Teddy Kotick (bass); Art Madigan (drums)

NYC, mid 1953, the Open Door down in Greenwich Village, five of the most under-recorded, underrated and now mainly unremembered, musicians jammed.

With the exception of Fruscella who, prior to this session had only been recorded once, all five had a pedigree. Moore had, recorded with Mulligan and would later have several albums under his belt in both America and Scandinavia. He was very much of the Lesterian school of tenor playing. He was also a heavy drinker who died after falling downstairs when 'under the influence'. Triglia played piano on Mingus' Tijuana Modes. Kotick was one of Bird's favourite bassists whilst Madigan recorded with Wardell Gray and Art Farmer.

In truth this record isn't that wonderful, the piano's out of tune and Fruscella who sounds as if he influenced, or was influenced by, Miles and Chet meanders ineffectively and Moore, one of my all-time favourite tenor players, is equally uninspired.

What does make the record something else are the sleeve notes by the late Dan Morgenstein, they're priceless. His description of the Open Door makes the old Jazz Café in Newcastle sound like the Ritz*.

*No one I knew ever ate there, but when we were flush we ordered beer or whiskey. The cups were chipped and brown around the rims, and the grimy glasses often bore lipstick traces. Dan Morgenstein (Feb. 1981).

Yeas ago I went to Copenhagen with 2 friends Frank Toms and Pete Mallinson and we saw Dexter Gordon at the Montmartre Jazz Cliub. The interval act was Brew Moore and he played some cool Lester style tenor and had a large white mouthpiece. Frank was very impressed.! Must have been hard having to follow Dexter though. I recall Brew did Fools Rush In and the drummer was Willie Shioppe, A memorable night in Denmark!
