The Churches Conservation Trust looks after more than 350 churches of historic interest. 1719 in Hendon, Sunderland is one of them. The church, dating from 1719 (hence its name), is at the very heart of what is known as 'Old Sunderland'. Lottery money has helped restore and transform the building into a splendid cultural venue and once a month the candlelit Old Black Cat Jazz Club welcomes jazz fans from across Wearside and beyond. This evening it was all about Chet Baker. Perhaps the jazz icon holds appeal beyond that of the 'jazz community', whatever the reason, 1719 attracted a large crowd.
In recent times, Pete Tanton paying homage to his fellow American has proven to be a concert winner. Tanton's the ideal candidate to do justice to Baker, both as a trumpet player and vocalist. Joining our man from Alabama, pianist Alan Law, bassist Mick Shoulder and drummer Mark Robertson, the 'Chet Set' opened with Line for Lyons. Tanton's trumpet projected effortlessly, no mic required. Tanton's relaxed demeanour holds great appeal, the audience hanging on his every word as he narrated the life and times of Chesney Henry 'Chet' Baker Jr.
As an accompanist to singers, Alan Law is up there with the best of them and 1719's full house frequently showed its appreciation of his artistry. Similarly, bassist Mick Shoulder offered fine support, never overplaying, simply playing what was required. In the absence of John Bradford, drummer Mark Robertson did a great job, for much of the evening brushes and mallets the tools of his trade. Let's Get Lost, It Could Happen to You (Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Burke), this was Pete Tanton at his best.
