Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Nick Tomalin Quintet - Shades of Shearing

Nick Tomalin (piano); Nat Steele (vibes); Dave Warren (guitar); Dominic Howles (bass); Matt Fishwick (drums).

A reimagined version of the fabulous George Shearing Quintet, a band that created a lot of  attention on both sides of the Atlantic back in the late 1940s/early 50s when the classic singles first appeared on those distinctive, yellow labelled MGM 78s. I've still got a few of them plus a double album collection.

Over the years, the distinctive, closely knit harmony became over-formulated with familiarity perhaps taking the edge off the initial excitement.

However, bands such as the Nick Tomalin Quintet go a long way to recreating the original magic without losing their own identity.

Eight numbers associated with Shearing and a couple of originals by Tomalin composed in the style of the late great pianist make for some enjoyable listening.

Modern recording techniques and imaginative arranging by the leader make this an album to be neither discarded nor to replace the originals but to store alongside them - one complements the other.

Shades of Shearing is due for release on CD and digital on Oct. 21 however, if you happen to be loitering with intent in Soho on Sunday October 27 make sure that that intent is to go to the album launch in Ronnie's.

Well worth checking out, particularly if you're a Shearing fan If you're not, I guarantee you soon will be! Lance
