The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. John Cram

The death has been announced in today's Shields Gazette of organist/accordionist John Cram on Sept. 27.

Although not an out and out jazzman he could, because of his acute sense of pitch, hold his own in any musical situation.

He began on accordion and his teacher, my father, would marvel at how quickly he picked things up. He only needed to hear it once and he'd nailed it.

After playing in local dance bands on accordion, and I was privileged to sometimes share the stage with him, with the expansion of the working men's clubs he switched to Hammond organ and became resident at Hebburn's Elmfield Social Club for many years.

When he switched from accordion to organ he told me that one of the club committee men asked him if he would have to turn the organ on its side for him to play it! That was probably just one of John's jokes as he was a great funster and usually had a quip to make. They were always funny but never nasty. 

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

John Cram was 95 years of age when he left us.
