Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Spicy Li'l Devils @ Prohibition Bar - March 14

Ali Affleck (vocals); Lorenzo Cortés (guitar); Mathieu Meyer (piano, vocals)

The Spicy Li'l Devils have been touring No Regrets, a first album by Ali Affleck's new band. This evening at Prohibition Bar it was the trio and for a time it looked like it would be a duo. Ali dropped off the boys - Lorenzo Cortés and Mathieu Meyer - at the door and drove off in search of a parking space. Fast forward some forty five minutes or so and no sign of AA. The boys were getting twitchy...

The eight o'clock start came and went. Gone nine, the boys couldn't wait any longer, they wanted to play. Guitarist Lorenzo Cortés pulled up a chair, snug to the upright. Pianist Mathieu Meyer sat at the upright and off they went, opening with Dinah. Wow! These guys can play, then some.

Huge applause, whistles, this was the business! Deep PurpleI Love YouSometimes I'm Happy, the musicianship spellbinding, the joint was literally jumpin' - the swing dancers had taken to the floor.

Ali Affleck arrived, a tad late but no matter. Standing at the bar, AA picked up on the vibe, the boys were doing alright! Eventually, Affleck joined our Paris-based duo. Opening with I Get the Blues When it Rains, Affleck was looking to make up for lost time. When Day is Done confirmed AA was on form but, on this occasion, the night belonged to Cortés and Meyer. Wow, what a night! It's always a treat to hear Ali singing - last night it was a touch of Annette Hanshaw, some Billie, and Alberta Hunter, and these guys are the real deal! It was their first time on Tyneside too, but we'll have to make sure it's not the last!
