This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Paul Skerritt @ the Glasshouse on April 26

Today's Shields Gazette features an article on north east jazz and swing singer Paul Skerritt drawing attention to his forthcoming concert at the Glasshouse, Gateshead on April 26.

Backing Paul will be the fourteen piece Danny Miller Big Band. The band, mainly from the north west (although usually with a couple of top notch local ringers), has backed Paul on several occasions, including a couple of concerts at South Shields' Westovian Theatre where the packed house gave singer and band a standing ovation and deservedly so.

Although some of the repartee between the singer and bandleader is of the Rat Pack variety this is much more than a mere tribute to a bygone era. Sure he'll tip his hat to Frank and Dean - the audience would feel cheated if he didn't - but you can also expect more contemporary voices to enter into the mix and all done without losing that big band sound.

Paul summed-up his feelings when he said:  ''Playing in such an iconic venue is great for myself and the band and I'm really excited for the show.''
