Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Sid Jacobs & Tom Remon (Prohibition Bar - March 31)

On Sunday (March 31) Sid Jacobs and Tom Remon will be dropping by Prohibition Bar. The guitar duo's UK tour is coming to an end and this Newcastle concert will be your last opportunity to hear American virtuoso Jacobs before he flies home next week. London based Remon is no stranger to the Pink Lane venue and he'll be back again next month working alongside Laurence Harrison.

At the age of 18 Sid Jacobs became the youngest faculty member in the music department of the University of Nevada. Conducting guitar masterclasses at locations across the globe, Jacobs developed the curriculum for the Advanced Bebop and Jazz Guitar course at the Dick Grove School and the Jazz Guitar class at the Musicians Institute (MI and GIT), where he continues to teach. Jacobs has worked with many household names including Larry Goldings, Eddie Harris, Harold Land, Brad Mehldau and Buddy Montgomery. His busy teaching, recording and performance schedule, plus the writing and publication of instructional books and production of DVDs makes this Sid Jacobs-Tom Remon 2024 UK tour a real rarity.

In his late twenties, Tom Remon is a something of a veteran recording artist with three albums under his belt to date, including Duality, a jazz guitar duo recording with the great Jim Mullen. A graduate of Middlesex University and the Jazz Warriors' development programme, a recent guitar-drums duo tour with David Lyttle included a date in Sunderland, perhaps next time they'll make it to Tyneside. Don't miss this opportunity to hear Sid Jacobs - and Tom Remon! - at Prohibition Bar. Doors at 6:00pm, on stage at seven, it's a 'Jar on the Bar' gig, dig deep. Russell
