Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

DJM Trio @ the Railway, Stockport - Feb. 25

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Dave Walsh (drums); Jamie Taylor (guitar); Martin Longhawn (keys).

Another busy Sunday night at the Railway with a trio containing a newcomer to this venue Jamie Taylor who played standing up without the help of a stool or chair. The other members of this unit have played here in various combos but this was the first time as an organ trio. They certainly made the audience sit up when they started things off with an up-tempo I'll Remember April  which drew much applause.

The sound balance I found to be a bit over-heavy on the side of the drums so that sometimes it was difficult to hear the keyboard solos clearly, but, maybe that was the effect they wanted. I personally like the kind of organ trio approach that you find on those Riverside Wes Montgomery Albums.

I liked Taylor’s compositions and, in particular, one called Shepherd’s Crook which was well received by the regulars. Another of his tunes that I liked was Elementary which was written as a tribute to  the late Leeds musician Colin Watson.

The next jazz night at the Railway is Tuesday Feb 27 with Jeff Guntren  and Paul Hartley’s  Band. Mike Farmer (our north west correspondent).

I'll Remember April; Shepherd’s Crook; Little Green Men; Elementary; Ah-Leu-Cha; The Corkscrew?;  Grant Green tune?
