Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Hello from the New Century Ragtime Orchestra!

Our next concert will be on Saturday evening,  March 23 at Gosforth Civic Theatre, Regent Farm Road, Newcastle NE3 3HD, another new venue for us, very near to Regent Centre metro and bus station on the Great North Road through Gosforth.

As ever, we'll be featuring Caroline on vocals and we'll be joined by Martin Litton on piano. Martin is an internationally renowned pianist, arranger and bandleader, specialising in all classic jazz styles from ragtime to swing, so he's a perfect fit for us! He's equally effective as a soloist, accompanist or band pianist, as evidenced by his theatre show Swinging at the Cotton Club and in previous years with the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra. And of course the show will be compered once again by our saxophonist extraordinaire, Mr Steve Andrews.

Tickets (£20) are available in advance from Dave Kerr ragtimedavekerr@aol.com or 0191 281 4011, or can be purchased on the night, subject to availability. Or buy them direct from the theatre in person or online at gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk.

Bar facilities are available, and doors open at 7pm. We hope to see you there!

Phil Rutherford

The New Century Ragtime Orchestra

This twelve-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of ragtime in the 1890s through to the early swing era of the 1930s.

Lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for full ensemble, we perform not only ragtime composers such as Scott Joplin but also classic jazz and hot dance music from the 1920s, and the early swing of Duke Ellington.
