A good choice of standards for Silberstein's first album of classic songs. With the exception of Stella by Starlight none could be said to have been overworked and even Stella is given a makeover that transforms her into the youthful beauty she once was.
Strictly speaking, only those members of the general public who are of a certain age would probably recognise no more than four of the eight tracks as standards - Serenata, If I Loved You, Never Let me go and Stella by Starlight.
The other four: the bossa Beija Flor, recorded by Jim Hall in 1989, George Coleman's Lo-Joe, Tommy Flanagon's Eclypso and Miles' Little Willie Leaps are standards from the jazz canon.
Silberstein is a new name to me but he's now high on my list of current guitar heroes. Coleman doesn't blow on every track but when he does he makes his presence felt. Patitucci is magnificent and Billy Hart is cookin' throughout - when is he not?!
To quote the final sentence of the blurb: "This album doesn't just contain standards: it sets them." Amen to that. Lance.
