This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Matthew Forster Quartet @ the Lit & Phil - Jan. 19

The Lit & Phil was the place to be on a cold Friday lunchtime in Newcastle! We were eagerly anticipating  a sold out gig by the Matthew Forster Quartet.

This was a fabulous concert of mainly original compositions with only a couple of standards included to make a diverse and hugely engaging set.

The guys got right into Mindful, a Matthew Forster composition, followed by Black Shiraz what's not to like there! Next up was one of the standards It Could Happen To You by Jimmy Van Heusen.  Cats In The Coffee was apparently inspired by Alice in Wonderland which kinda surprised John Pope who nonetheless opened with a beautiful solo introduction to the piece. Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock followed and the set concluded with the leader's All Bets Are Off.

The Lit and Phil crowd applauded enthusiastically and judging by the conversations after the gig are looking forward to their next performance so look out for it... I know I'll be there. Pam
