This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Congratulations to William Joseph Watson BEM

I had to scroll through a lot of names to find him, that's one of the pitfalls of being a W in an alphabetical list which probably explains why Shirley Bassey was up at the top end.

Nevertheless, the announcement below that William Joseph Watson, 'his mother called him Bill', had been awarded a BEM in the New Year Honours List: 2024 was a pleasant surprise  and fully deserved.

Now heading into its twenty-first year the GNBBJF is acknowledged as the UK's biggest and most comprehensive big band festival attracting bands of all ages from all over the country and, of course, organised by Bill alongside his other activities as an educator and trumpet player.
