Saxophonist James Mainwaring has been seen and heard on the British jazz circuit for a decade and more, notably with Roller Trio. A lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire, Mainwaring's current project investigates improvisation (tenor sax) fused with samples, field recordings (hear the bird song!) and more.
Meditations 1A isn't jazz, it isn't meant to be, not by a long chalk. It's more a kaleidoscopic collision of sound: train (overground? underground?), car horn (NYC? Leeds, more likely!), fractured/fragmented voices, industrial noise. Mainwaring the composer explains all:
Meditations Vol. 1A explores melodic concepts for improvisation on the tenor saxophone, incorporating samples, synths, field recordings, drones, and beats. The eight pieces are based on eight of the twelve possible trichords. On tracks 2-8, the trichords are transposed four times to complete twelve-tone rows. For track 1, '1+4', I altered the sound by repeating one note across two of the trichords, resulting in an 11-note row. Using these note groupings, I freely improvise permutations of the four trichords along with permutations of the three notes within each one. Each row has a distinct sound that inspired the overall feel and production of the tracks. In real-time, it has been inspiring to discover the beautiful melodies that this concept can produce, and this is only the beginning.
