This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Merlin Roxby @ Prohibition Bar - April 20

Prohibition Bar's resident ragtime pianist rocked up once more to play a selection of tunes from his slowly-but-surely expanding repertoire. Unassuming, no announcements, Merlin simply sits at the house upright and knocks out one number after another. The masters are in his set list (Joplin, James P et al) as are unlikely selections from the video gaming world. 

Left Bank Two (that's the Vision On tv theme), Hallelujah I Love Her So, an excellent Heliotrope Bouquet (Scott Joplin/Louis Chauvin from 1907), Henry Mancini's Royal Blue, clearly our man isn't a purist, good for him! Casino Night from Sonic the Hedgehog followed by Top Cat (Officer Dibble in pursuit), Ray Charles' Hallelujah I Love Her So, Merlin drew applause from a select Thursday evening crowd. Two sets over a couple of hours or so, if ragtime and a little bit of stride is your thing, check out Merlin Roxby on Pink Lane, his next appearance is scheduled for Thursday 4 May. Russell
