Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

An International Jazz Day More Jam @ The Globe - April 30

If it's International Jazz Day you can bet on Newcastle Jazz Co-op marking the occasion. The fact that April 30 is the day the Co-op acquired the Globe just happens to be something of a neat coincidence. This afternoon's More Jam session is a staple of the year round jazz on offer and there was a good turn out of participants and listeners.

Bassist Dave Parker marshalled proceedings, announcing Real Book numbers and efficiently shuffling the on-stage pack. Drummer Michael Howard and Karen Rann playing soprano sax were familiar faces supporting a rotating cast of keen sitters-in.

Arriving at the Railway Street premises the first of four vocalists was on stage singing Willow Weep for Me. Three others, including Miriam McCormick and Magda Ruta, would follow.

Alison Paton spelled Michael Howard, later Freddie Richards would do the exact same. One or two other reeds sat-in, pianist Alan Law arrived (catch him at Tuesday's Black Swan jam session), David Gray upped the ante, Edgar Bell muscled in (he'll be jamming on Tuesday evening), Rachel Richman blew alto, all, in various permutations, got stuck into WaveBeatriceAngel EyesAll of MeComes Love (Magda Ruta) and many more before closing with I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to be Free.
