Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adeus Ivan “Mamão” Conti

Hoochie Coochie has presented a whole lot of outstanding jazz/soul acts such as Chaka Khan, Gregory Porter, and Incognito to mention but a few. One of the greatest of them all was/is Azymuth who played the venue at least a couple of times in 2013 and 2015. Their funky Brazilian groove transported dancers and listeners back to Rio.

That pulsating Brazilian beat was, in the main, due to percussionist  Ivan “Mamão” Conti who, sadly, died just two days ago (April 17) aged 76.

He thrilled the Hoochie crowd just as he did audiences all over the world for which we should feel privileged to have been a part of. I'm sure that Warren and all the Hoochie patrons who heard the band on those occasions will join me in mourning his passing.

I saw them the first time they played Hoochie. Many of my Jazz-Funk friends rated them very highly and I've been through almost all of their albums at one time or another.
So pleased Jamie Cullum didn't play the dreadful Jazz Carnival but their other club hit Dear Limmertz on his radio show last night, though I think I'd have got more adventurous.
