Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Van Gelder Studio Organ (May 16)

Rudy Van Gelder recorded a vast number of musicians, releasing hundreds of albums in the process. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and countless others booked studio time at the now historic New Jersey shrine. Now, in the age of the online gig, a rather tasty-looking live stream is in the offing.

On Saturday (May15) four A-listers will be streaming across North America with a re-stream opportunity the next day (Sunday 16) for fans in Japan/Asia and Europe (including Britain). The Van Gelder Studio organ is being touted as the star of the show. Joey DeFrancesco is charged with the responsibility of doing justice to the instrument played by the likes of Ray CharlesJack McDuffJimmy McGriffShirley ScottDr Lonnie SmithJimmy Smith and Larry Young. Joining DeFranceso will be three star performers - Peter Bernstein (guitar), Billy Hart (drums) and special guest, saxophonist Houston Person. The quartet will be playing numbers associated with some of the classic organ albums recorded at the Van Gelder Studio.

The European re-stream is the one jazz fans here in Britain will want to sign up to at the user-friendly time of 7:00pm on Sunday 16. There is a $15 booking fee and, if you book by the end of today (Sunday 9) you'll have access to a Zoom conversation between drummers Billy Hart and Marcus Gilmore. Book now at: www.vangelder.live.
