This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sam Young - Alfie’s Theme (Live)


International Jazz Day at the Globe (and throughout the world) is held annually on April 30. For Jazz Co-op the date is doubly significant as it was also the date when the first ever jazz cooperative was formed in the UK back in 2014.

Normally the occasion would be an all-day breakfast of jazz, jam and just about anyone who knew which end to blow through. However, this year, due to the pandemic, April arrived too soon and the spotlight was on a livestream from the Globe by Scottish band the  Matt Carmichael Quartet which was duly covered by BSH.

The local presence wasn't totally absent. Pianist, keyboardist, composer, vocalist and occasional drummer Sam Young recorded a video on Facebook/YouTube to mark the occasion and kindly sent me a snippet of his version of Sonny Rollins' theme from the Michael Caine movie Alfie called, appropriately enough,  Alfie's Theme. 

An obviously talented young man with his fingers in a lot of pies - or rather bands - Sam is equally at home in a variety of situations e.g. he currently gigs as a keyboardist in a mod rock and indie band, The Scandals, a soul, Motown and party band, 9th Avenue and northern soul band, The Odels. Should he focus on more specialised channels then he could well become a force to be reckoned with.
